Spiral Notebook Cover Tutorial

  • ½ yd of Décor bond stabilizer
  • ½ yard of main fabric
  • ½ yard of coordinating fabric
  • 14” or longer zipper
  • Matching or invisible thread
  • Wonder tape
  • Spiral Notebook (8 x 10 1/2″)

Cut 1 piece of main fabric 11 ½ x 17 ¼.

Cut 1 piece of main fabric 11 ½ x 15

Cut 2 pieces 11 ½ x 6 of coordinating fabric

Cut 4 strips 11 ½ x 1 ¾ of coordinating fabric

1 piece 11 ½ x 7 ½ from coordinating fabric for lining

Fuse décor bond to each piece except the ones cut 11 ½ x 1 ¾.

Fold all 4 pieces of the 1 3/4″ strips in half and then press.  Then fold only 2 of the pieces, both sides into the middle, press and fold over so no raw edge is showing.

From the 11 1/2 x 17 1/4 piece of main fabric, cut one piece

5 3/4 x 11 1/2. These are the pieces that you will attach the zipper to.

Attach wonder tape to both edges of the zipper.

Align the cut pieces in step 3 on your zipper.  Using your zipper foot, stitch the zipper to one piece of the main fabric.  It will have raw edges but that is fine,  we will cover them next.  Then repeat for the other side and top stitch in place.

Lay down another layer of wonder tape onto the raw edge of the fabric.  This will hold any decorative trim you want to attach and the folded fabric strips to cover the raw edges.

Top stitch the edges of the folded strips of fabric.

Attach the remaining 1 3/4” strips to the 11 1/2 x 6″ pieces of fabric to cover the raw edges on one long side of each piece.  These two pieces will be the inside of the notebook cover.

Fold one end of the lining fabric (long side) about ¼” and stitch to cover raw edge.  Attach lining to the back side of the top cover.  Align it with the left side of the zipper,  right side of lining to wrong side of zipper and stitch in place using the top stitching line as your guide.

Be sure to unzip the zipper about half way.  Lay the main piece of fabric (the one with the zipper) right side up on a flat surface.  Place the 2 pieces of fabric for the inside cover right side down on opposite ends.

Take the piece of fabric 11 ½ x 15 and lay it right side down in the middle of the other fabrics.  Pin all the sides and stitch with a ¼” twice around the cover.  Clip the corners and the excess ends of the zipper.

Turn the notebook cover inside out.  Press and insert the spiral notebook and you are DONE!

Hopefully you have figured this out through other tutorials, if not the secret opening is through the opened zipper- It is VITAL to remember to half open the zip where you are instructed to do so. Very hard to fix if you forget.
